Wattles
Wattles are made from straw or mulch. They are generally used in a series of runs as a slope control. They are sometimes used as perimeter controls. They work in the same manner as silt fence, by ponding water and letting the sediment fall to the ground while the water slowly passes through the wattle. The most popular sizes are 9” and 12”.Wattles are sometimes used because they can be moved out of the way so equipment can pass. You can’t drive over them; because once they are mashed down they are no longer effective. Wattles will be overtopped by any significant rain storm due to their lower overall height as compared to silt fence.
